Close the month properly
Spend five minutes on the old month before starting the new one. What went well, what slipped, what you would refuse next time. Skipping the close is why the same problem keeps reappearing in your reviews.
Clear the decks
Empty the loose papers, the stray notes app, the sticky notes on the desk. Anything real goes onto the new month; anything else goes. A month starts best from a clean surface.
Choose one focus
One goal the month is organised around, written at the top of the page. Not three, not five. A second and third focus is how a month ends with everything half-done.
Load the dates
Write in the fixed commitments, the bill dates, the birthdays and the deadlines before you plan anything aspirational. Seeing a month that is already 60% full changes what you agree to.
Book the next reset now
Put the next month's reset in the calendar before you close this one. A ritual with a date survives; a ritual you mean to do when things calm down does not.
