Meal planning is not about being organised for its own sake. It is about removing one decision from every evening and one impulse from every shopping trip. Twenty minutes on Sunday does both.

Step 1: Set theme nights (5 minutes, once)

Themes make the plan almost automatic, because you are not inventing a menu from scratch each week:

  • Monday — something with mince (burgers, tacos, bolognese)
  • Tuesday — pasta or a one-pan bake
  • Wednesday — chicken
  • Thursday — leftovers or a fridge-raid plate
  • Friday — something fun: pizza, curry, takeaway-at-home
  • Saturday — cook something slower
  • Sunday — batch cooking for the week ahead

Step 2: Fill the grid (10 minutes a week)

Open the weekly meal spread and write one meal per slot. Two rules keep it realistic:

  1. Reuse ingredients. If Monday uses mince, Wednesday uses the other half of the packet. Leftovers become Thursday by design, not by accident.
  2. Match the effort to the day. Least time on your busiest evening, most time on the days you are actually home.

Step 3: Build the list from the plan (5 minutes)

Grocery lists written from memory are how you end up shopping twice. Walk down the plan, column by column, and write what each meal needs — then check the pantry and cross off what you already have. Sort the list by aisle (produce, dairy, meat, pantry) so the shop is one lap instead of three.

The 90-minute batch block

Sunday: one grain, one protein, two roasted vegetables, one sauce. That is four weeknight meals that only need assembling. It is also the single biggest saver of weekday time and takeaway spending.

Reducing waste without meal-prepping everything

  • Keep one flexible slot for “whatever needs using up”. Plans that are 100% fixed get ignored.
  • Freeze in portions when you cook a large batch, and write the date on the container.
  • Keep two pantry fallback meals you can cook from stock — the week a plan falls apart is the week they earn their shelf space.

After four or five weeks you will have a rotation you trust, and the 20 minutes turns into five.
