Why they hide

A subscription is designed to be forgotten. It arrives as a small, unremarkable line on a statement you skim. Ten of them is a car payment you have never once looked at directly.

List every recurring charge

Go through two months of statements, not one, because annual renewals hide in the gaps. Write every recurring charge on one page: name, amount, billing date, and whether you used it in the last month.

Mark it keep, pause or cut

Anything you have not opened in a month is a cut or a pause. Pausing is often easier than cancelling and achieves the same thing — the charge stops while you decide.

Then re-check in a quarter

Leaks return. Put a quarterly reminder in your planner to repeat the audit. Forty minutes, four times a year, tends to find more than any single heroic budgeting session.
